Inflation accelerates to 12.9% in Yemen at beginning of 2011

 According to new figures from the Central Bank of Yemen, consumer price inflation edged higher at the beginning of 2011, reaching 12.9% year-on-year (y/y) in January, up from 12.5% at the end of 2010.

The slight increase in consumer prices was led by a 9.7% y/y jump in the cost of food and beverages, which represent just under 44% of the headline index by weight. In addition, the cost of cigarettes, tobacco and the popular qat surged by 23.4% y/y.
Housing and utility prices, which account for an additional 13% of the headline index, also posted strong growth during January, up by 23.6% y/y.
